AI-Enabled Threats: What You Need to Know and How to Stay Safe

A Message from our Chief Information Security Officer.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the financial services industry – streamlining operations, enhancing customer service, and improving fraud detection. But with these advancements come new and evolving threats. I want to share how AI-enabled threats are impacting financial services and what you, our valued customers, can do to protect yourselves.

The Rise of AI-Enabled Threats

AI has become a double-edged sword. While financial service providers use it to improve security and efficiency, cybercriminals are leveraging AI to launch more sophisticated attacks. These include:

  • Voice Cloning and Deepfakes: Attackers can now mimic voices with just a few seconds of audio, enabling impersonation scams that target both customers and employees.
  • AI-Powered Phishing: Fraudsters use AI to craft convincing emails and text messages that bypass traditional filters and trick recipients into revealing sensitive information.
  • Real-Time Payment Fraud: AI enables criminals to exploit instant payment systems, making it harder to detect and stop fraudulent transactions before they’re completed.
  • Social Engineering at Scale: Cybercriminals use AI to impersonate executives and manipulate employees, leading to breaches that can cripple entire organizations.

How We’re Responding

At Five Star Bank, we have taken proactive steps to strengthen our defenses against AI-enabled threats and are investing in AI-powered security tools to detect and block threats in real time. Our systems analyze and correlate data to identify suspicious behavior and prevent fraud before it reaches you.
We also conduct regular risk assessments and audits, partner with cybersecurity experts, and provide ongoing training to our associates to stay ahead of emerging threats.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

While we’re working hard to detect threats and secure our systems, your vigilance is equally important. Here are steps you can take:

1. Be Skeptical of Unusual Requests

If you receive a call, email, or text message that seems out of character – even if it sounds familiar – verify it through a known and trusted channel. AI voice cloning is real and increasingly common.

2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords and Enable MFA

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a critical layer of protection and should be used whenever available. Most digital account compromises occur when MFA is not utilized, or people are tricked into providing login credentials and security codes.

3. Keep Your Software Updated

Regular updates to your phone, apps, and antivirus software help patch vulnerabilities that AI-driven attacks may exploit.

4. Limit What You Share Online

Cybercriminals mine social media and public records to build convincing impersonation profiles. Avoid posting sensitive personal or professional details.

5. Educate Yourself and Others

Awareness is your best defense. Share knowledge with family members, especially those who may be less tech-savvy.

6. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

If something doesn’t feel right, let us know. Early reporting helps us respond quickly and limit potential damage.

Looking Ahead

AI will continue to evolve, and so will the threats. But with strong partnerships between our security teams and our customers, we can stay ahead of the curve. Your trust is our most valuable asset, and we’re committed to protecting it.
